CCNY Topscorer Eager to Play His First Playoff Game

By Ralph Chery, Contributor |

Kenan Redzematovic is the best goalscorer City College has seen in the past five years, netting 39 percent of City’s goal tally this season with seven goals. But strangely enough, the striker never played in the playoffs his entire career.

Redzematovic missed the playoffs in 2013, the entire 2014 season, and last year’s playoffs with knee injuries.

The forward is set to play his first playoff match against Baruch College on Wednesday.

“I’m excited to finally be healthy and be able to help my team in the playoffs, it’s a great feeling,” Redzematovic said. “It’s just strange that it’s my senior year and it will be my first taste of the playoffs.”

The Beavers hold a 5-2 playoff record without their topscorer. They reached the final in 2013 but lost to Baruch 1-0 in overtime. They won the CUNYAC championship last season.

Redzematovic talks about his experience from watching his team play from the bench.

“It was tough to watch from the bench last year,” the junior said. “But the boys did a great job and obviously got the job done without me so all the credit goes to the guys out there on the pitch.”

CCNY would be pleased to have Redzematovic in the playoffs, for they never scored more than two goals in a playoff game for the past four seasons. However, scoring isn’t the striker’s priority this Wednesday.

“You know it’s always great to score goals, but as long as the team wins and we keep progressing that’s really what it’s all about,” he said.

Redzematovic scored the opener against the Bearcats earlier this season in a 2-1 victory at
Randall’s Island Icahn Stadium on Sept. 24th.
